Do-it-yourself Worm Farm

If you really want to have a flourishing, organic garden that comes from your recyled waste – then you really have to make yourself a Worm Farm. I will show you how easy and inexpensive it is to make yourself.

[one_half]All you need to get started[/one_half][one_half_last]Three black utility boxes[/one_half_last]

You will be able to get all your components from your local hardware store. I used 3 x smallish black plastic utility boxes with loose-fitting lids. You want to be able to open and close it easily. Then you will need 12 x electrical threaded pipe connectors (20mm in size). These will be the opening base locking legs so the worms will be able to move between boxes. I’ll show you what I mean… then you will need 4 x air vents and 2 x spade drill bits (a 22mm and a 18mm) and an electric drill!

The Worm Farm will be stacked (like in the picture) and can be placed anywhere because it takes up no room and it does not smell. The bottom box will contain the worm tea. The top two boxes will hold your worms and your table scraps and cut up newspaper. This will eventually be composted and you will be left with nutritious worm compost – black gold!

At the base of the middle box you will drill six holes with the 18mm spade drill bit. Here is where you will insert the connectors.

Here you see exactly where to drill the holes. The longest part of the connector will be on the outside of box. This will act as a support when you stack the boxes together.

The positioning of the holes needs to be accurate so that the base of the box fits exactly onto the lid of the box underneath.

[one_half]See-the base sits on the lid of box underneath[/one_half][one_half_last]Now add the air vents on the sides[/one_half_last]

Now remember – only 2 boxes will have holes at the bottom and 2 lids will have matching holes.  The bottom box will contain the worm tea so no holes here!

Now each box will fit perfectly so they stack well. It is neat and unobtrusive and really stays quite clean. I have had mine now for 2 years and it has never smelled. When the middle box is completely full, then you start adding kitchen scraps to the top box. The worms will migrate from the middle box to the top box. Then you will be able to harvest the worm compost from the middle box without damaging any worms in the process. Remember this process takes a long time, however you can harvest the worm tea from the bottom box as soon as a few weeks. This “liquid gold” you dilute with water (preferably from your rain water tank as chlorine from your tap water destroys the good bacteria in the tea) 1 part tea to 5 parts water. You can water all your plants and vegetables and you can also water the leaves as a foliage feeder. Really – this is all you need to keep your garden well fed. It costs you nothing and you have a natural compost maker.

PLEASE NOTE: You can add all vegetable straps but avoid too much fruit scraps. This brings too many fruit flies and ants and causes an unpleasant environment for the worms. Rather only add banana peels and apple peels. No soft fruits and no pineapple. NO LEMON OR ORANGE PEELS. This is too acidic for worms. NO FAT – NO MEAT PRODUCTS. Layer the kitchen scraps with cut up news paper. The worms love it!!! I think they need dry airy spaces to breathe. They also devour the paper! Keep away from direct sunlight.

In my next post, I will show you how healthy and productive my Worm Farm is. It took me a while to post this, because I wanted to see how it would work. I have had other home-made worm farms and they got messy and slimey and looked ugly and the commercially available Worm Farms are very expensive. Mine literally cost me R360.00!!!! So now you have all the info to make your own!

Happy worm farming xxxxx

I would LOVE to hear from you if you have a successful worm farm!!!

January Harvest

The year started with so many projects on the “TO DO” list, that we saw January come and go. We have successfully completed our Solar Geyser project and even though it is not a real gardening project, I really want to share the experience with you!! So I will make my next post a project post!

But January still managed to delight me with lots of wonderful flavour and colour! See what my garden harvest was this January…….

Kale, Spinach, figs, lemons, grenadillas, and yellow sweet peppers!

Even though we are experiencing water restrictions, the fig tree managed to gives us super sweet and unusually creamy fruit!

Bursting with sweetness!

Grenadillas are falling off the vine every day!! I have to give them away!

The Kale is so crunchy and very edible. I was not a fan but if you sprinkle with olive oil and lemon juice and rub it in…..very yummy and wonderfully nutritious salad addition!

Lemons are always used and welcome in my kitchen. If not for cooking then for cleaning. GREAT TIP: I take a used lemon slice and rub my cutting boards to clean it and remove stains and when rinsed they come out washed and fresh!

My Sweet Yellow Pepper – did you know that your green pepper will either turn red or yellow – depending on the type!

[one_half]My January Harvest[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Tons of figs[/one_half_last]

[one_half]Grenadilla or Passion Fruit[/one_half]

November gifts from my Garden

I am so glad to be in the dirt again! So much has happened these past months and to be back in the garden to see what gifts it brings makes my heart so glad!! My favourite is the summer tomatoes!! Nothing tastes like a sun-ripened red garden tomato!! My salads are jumping for joy! I am harvesting the most delicious varieties of lettuce and to add to this, great summer sweet basil. I am in food heaven!! The fruits are slowly ripening and next year we will have passion fruit and great figs and peaches!

I spent a great deal of time preparing the soil this year. I included the rich composted horse manure from my farming neighbour – literally a few wheel barrows full! This black gold was added in August and September. Now I can reap the rewards!! The greens are really GREEN!! My spinach and kale are growing by the day.

Now that I have successfully completed a “Jason Vale 28 day Super Juice Me” challenge with my daughter, Kristen, I am hooked on juicing!! I am now going to grow huge amounts of vegetables to juice – celery, spinach, kale, peas, broccoli, beets, carrots, fennel, asparagus, lemons (must get a lime tree), zucchini, cabbage, and more!! I am going to try cucumber this year again! Not successful in the past, but a must for juicing! My apple trees are still too young and my blueberry bush was traumatized by a transplant. Hopefully next year.

Here are the beginnings for the up-coming season!! Happy Gardening and Happy juicing!!

[one_half]My favourite!!! Garden Roma tomatoes[/one_half]

Garden revival

You know that feeling when you go away on a holiday and come back to your home – it feels like you are a stranger! It takes awhile to become familiar again with your garden. That’s how I felt!

I felt as if I had been away or hibernating – I had to spend at least a day just greeting everything that was actively growing or peeping out of the soil. So many plants that have re-seeded and started to take over. And the bulbs I was hoping would survive have not disappointed! The Chasmanthe and the Louisiana Irises just make me brighten with pride! I had to chop and carry away all the overgrown borage and nasturtiums – they were like monsters. I should have taken photos….. but I did take a lot of photos of what is happening in my garden revival…..

My first Louisiana Iris this spring!!

October clean up

It is always a good idea to have a family visit to motivate you to get the garden looking great! This got me energized and I have enjoyed the manual labour! Got all the muscle groups working! I ordered bags and bags of compost and bark for mulch and got my act together! It might not look like much from the photos but the whole garden was tackled!

I also have some really beautiful blooms to show you!

My roses are finally blooming!

Apple blossoms all over. I can’t wait for these to become golden delicious apples this year!

Love my Irises – the white are my favourite!

My little broody Tara – I can’t snap her out of this! There are NO eggs and she sits and sits on the nest! So I have closed the door – but this makes me more sad! She sits on the balcony! What to do!?

Growing up

No matter what the weather – come winter or summer – rain or shine – seeds will grow!!! I still get excited when I see my seeds sprouting!! It has taken two weeks for them to go from seed to sprouts! The amazingness of nature!! So every two weeks I should be sowing seeds! Wow, I would have a harvest garden for all to envy! I still have to get to that perfect balance of harvesting food from my garden to sustain us on a daily basis and some for the family and lots for the chickens and compost heaps. I know that with all the knowledge I have gathered since gardening and blogging, I can have this perfectly harmonious vegetable garden. But it still takes enormous effort, energy and time to get the balance right!  I am just pleased that I can have this piece of paradise that I call my garden (and home) and that I can share it and what I grow in it will those I care about! I have grown up, along with my seeds, and through my failures and my achievements I am still here! I still make time to go and listen to my plants and play with the chickens and to enjoy heaven on earth – come rain or shine!

[one_half]Sweet Rocket[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Kale[/one_half_last]

It is so interesting to see the seedlings of Kale – Chinese Cabbage – Sweet Rocket all look alike. I was not aware that Sweet Rocket was of the same family!!

I have been looking for Kale seeds for ages!! I am excited to grow it because of all the power-packed nutrients and it looks pretty! This is what I found in my research:

Kale is a nutritional powerhouse and is beneficial to your health in many ways. One cup of kale has zero fat and only 36 calories and is high in vitamins and antioxidants. You can eat this green raw or cooked.

Detoxification and Weight loss

The fiber (5 grams in one cup) and sulfur in kale aid with digestion and liver health. The Vitamin C it contains hydrates your body and increases your metabolism, leading to weight loss and healthy blood sugar levels. The fiber in kale also lowers cholesterol.

Strengthen your Immune System

Kale’s impressive concentration of nutrients strengthens the immune system and fights viruses and bacteria. Kale has more iron than beef, making it a great source of this valuable mineral for vegans and vegetarians. It helps more oxygen get to your blood and greatly helps those who are anemic.

Healthier Hair, Skin & Nails

The healthy balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids keep your body strong, healthy and beautiful from the inside out. Kale’s concentration of major nutrients gives your skin’s health and appearance a boost.

See Clearly and Stand Strong

Kale’s Vitamin A content helps keep the eyes from optical disorders that come with age. It also helps store vitamins in the retina. The calcium and vitamin K and D keep your bones strong.

Anti-inflammatory

The omega-3 fatty acids in kale help fight and alleviate arthritis, autoimmune disorders and asthma. The vitamin C content helps relieve stiff joints.

Fighting Disease

Kale, like other dark green veggies, may be helpful in preventing various cancers such as colon, prostate and ovarian. Its abundant vitamin K content is important for bone health, forestalling the effects of osteoporosis. And the folic acid and B6 provide cardiovascular support and prevent heart disease.

[one_half]Peas[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Seedlings in trays[/one_half_last]

In my seedling trays are: Kale, Chinese Cabbage, Sweet Rocket, Swiss Chard, Peas and Cos Lettuce.

Arugula, also known as Sweet Rocket or Garden Rocket, is a nutritious green-leafy vegetable of Mediterranean origin. It belongs within the Brassicaceae family similar as mustard greens, cauliflower, kale…,etc., and has the scientific name: Eruca sativa.

Fresh rocket is a very good source of folates. Like kale, salad rocket is an excellent source of vitamin A.  Carotenes convert into vitamin A in the body. Studies found that vitamin A and flavonoid compounds in green leafy vegetables help protect from skin, lung and oral cavity cancers.

This vegetable also rich in B-complex group of vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), and pantothenic acid those are essential for optimum cellular enzymatic and metabolic functions.

Fresh rocket leaves contain good levels of vitamin C, a powerful, natural anti-oxidant. Foods rich in this vitamin help the body develop resistance against infectious agents (boosts immunity) and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the body.

Salad rocket is one of the excellent vegetable sources for vitamin-K, which has potential role bone health by promoting osteotrophic (bone formation and strengthening) activity. Adequate vitamin-K levels in the diet help limiting neuronal damage in the brain; thus, has established role in the treatment of patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Arugula leaves contain adequate levels of minerals, especially copper and iron. In addition, it has small amounts of some other essential minerals and electrolytes such as calcium, iron, potassium, manganese, and phosphorus.

WOW!! I am growing a powerhouse of goodness!!

Have a Happy Gardening Day! xxxxxx

Garden Bloggers Harvest Day in March

The summer has past and we are going into autumn this Garden Bloggers Harvest Day in March and the veggie patches of  Two Gardens will be in the middle of refurbishment. We will be seeing the last of the lettuce and the summer veggies. Now is the time for clearing out the old and anticipating new growth!!!! The weatherman is still slinging heatwaves at us, so let’s see what we have been busy with this month!

Let’s see what can be harvested from Barbie’s Garden this month

The baskets full of veggies have come to an end – pity! But we are still able to harvest some delicious tomatoes and sweet basil. The Lemon tree is bursting with fruit – this is a treat for me because there is so much we do with lemons!! I grew my first cucumber – and it was delicious!! I see a few more on the vine so we look forward to lots more. The veggie patch is bare and this month I will be clearing and feeding the soil. Not much to show but at least it is an assortment of goodies.

[one_half]Cucumber starts off like this![/one_half]

[one_half_last]And ends up like this-in a plate![/one_half_last]

[one_half]Oh look! An eggplant too[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Need to get a few recipes for this![/one_half_last]

Sweet basil is still growing strong!

[one_half]Tomatoes are small but delicious![/one_half]

[one_half_last]Small Blondekopf Tomatoes[/one_half_last]

[one_half]Onions – I usually grow red ones[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Peppadew chillies galore[/one_half_last]

Lemons for Africa!

[one_half]The tree is full of lemons![/one_half]

[one_half_last]Lots of lemon juice in there![/one_half_last]

[one_half]Butternut squash still growing[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Hubbard and Butternut squash harvested[/one_half_last]

[one_half]Figs are coming to an end[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Lemon Balm, Oreganum and Thyme [/one_half_last]

[one_half]Hi girls – you busy?[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Who laid the extra egg?[/one_half_last]

Front garden activity

This has been such a busy weekend in the garden for me – no longer could I stand the disheveled look and the hanging, overgrown bushes. I had the energy and the will-power to get it right! With my boots and gloves on, I got out the lawn mower,  edge trimer, wheelbarrow, sheers and spade! The neighbour was thunderstruck! She could not believe that I did it all single-handedly! I even had time to fetch more apricot pips and a new (old) bench that was given to me by my best buddy! Thanks for the new addition to my front garden – it stands proudly and awaits friends to come and rest awhile!

[one_half][/one_half]

[one_half_last][/one_half_last]

[one_half][/one_half]

[one_half_last][/one_half_last]

I absolutely love it – it fits perfect into my style of garden. Thank you again and we both wait for your next visit!

The front garden is looking good – the one Leopard Tree had a burst of growth this summer – the other always seems to be 6 months behind!

[one_half]My Leopard Tree in the Grass feature[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Grass feature looking dried out![/one_half_last]

[one_half]Barrow of flowers managed through summer[/one_half]

[one_half_last]Grass mowed and edges cleaned[/one_half_last]

[one_third]Leopard Tree One[/one_third]

[one_third]Leopard Tree Two[/one_third]

[one_third_last]New Bench[/one_third_last]

I am exhausted but pleased with the clean up! Now I need to feed the garden. I have placed an order for Neutrog (organic fertilizer). I have found it the best and gives my garden a burst of new vooma! Can’t wait!

Wet October day

Well, the sun is hiding behind dark, ominous clouds and the rain is coming down. I know my garden loves it and after a few warm days, I am quite happy sitting indoors. Just survived a bout of nasty flu and a quiet weekend inside with a great book sounds like a good idea. I did, however, take a quick walk around to see what needed my attention, but my plants all waved me inside.  They are all happy. The Gardener can rest! xxx

[one_half]My Potato Sacks are looking great[/one_half]

[one_half]The rain is being enjoyed by all[/one_half]

[one_half_last]The potato bush is heavy with blooms[/one_half_last]

The sage has re-grown from the old plant in the veggie bed. I am enjoying the flowers. The Chrysanthemums are also thriving.

 [one_half]Beautiful sage[/one_half]

Well, I thought I could pack away my fuzzy blankets – 🙂 The cold is still creeping in this October month. Well, I’m gonna wrap up warm now and will see you all in the week.
