Mid-Spring in Two Gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

The sun is up early and the earth is warming up day by day, now that we are midway through Spring. Some blooms have come to an end but this only makes way for bigger and brighter flowers. Trips to the well-stocked local nursery are frequent to get all that is needed for a burst of colour with new seedlings and flowering plants.

Here’s what’s blooming in Christine’s garden in October 2012

The warmer days after all the rain means I have a garden full of beautiful colour, lots of buds already in bloom and loads more about to burst into flower. At last it feels like spring and I am again loving all the surprises in my garden. My pride and joy is the Japanese Crabapple which is in full bloom. To me it is the most exquisite of flowering trees.

My biggest surprise of all came today when I spotted the Japanese Cherry – it was a gift from a friend last year – just a twig. And guess what? It has started to sprout buds and one new shoot has started to flower. In about two weeks time the entire shrub should be covered in blossoms. A preview of the blossoms below. Here is my mid-spring show …

My garden is looking so bright and colourful with all the new blooms. All the hard work and attention given to my garden during the year is being rewarded with gorgeous new growth and flowers galore. My idea of adding flowers in amongst the vegetable garden, has given it a burst of colour as well as a host of good bug-a-boos. The butterflies, bees and birds are a welcome sight and enjoy the many treasures  – come have a look…….

Spring in Two Gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

Spring has finally arrived here in the Western Cape, South Africa. As if Mother Nature flipped a switch, the days are warm and the sun is melting the snow of the far mountain pecks. The gardens are excited to get going and we can feel the rush of spring.

“Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love! ” – Sitting Bull

Here’s what’s blooming in Christine’s garden in September 2012

It’s wonderful to be able to walk around outside again, barefoot and warmed by the suns rays and admiring the plants as they wake up from their rest. Every day brings new surprises like the tiny first blooms of the Ipheon, the Azaleas loud statement in bright pink and the more subtle blooms of the many white flowers I have all over the garden. And I’m happy as a lark being able to rush off to nurseries to see whats new in store. Happy Days!

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day washed out

I was heart broken when the weather turned nasty and the Cape storms hit our region with a force that went on and on. The ground is saturated and my garden looks like a huge pool. If we encounter another storm, then I’m afraid the ground cannot soak it away and the land will flood. It was near impossible to take part in the Garden Bloggers Bloom Day on the 15th, but I have managed to get a few blooms today and wanted to share these.

But first you need to see what my garden looked like on the 15th!

[one_half]The whole stone paving was flooded[/one_half]

I am so looking forward to spring – but I think the cold will still be with us for awhile. With snow on the mountains nearby, it will be a cold August!

So nice to follow all the GBBD posts to get me motivated.

Mid winter in Two Gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

It’s the coldest winter we’ve had in the Western Cape here in South Africa for as long as we can remember. There’s snow on the mountains nearby and everybody is talking about how cold it is. The promised storms we were warned about passed us by and hit further inland with snow falling in places in South Africa where it has never snowed before. Around here we had a lot of rain, fairly strong wind but not much else to get excited about. Gardening between downpours has started again in earnest as we prepare for spring and look forward to sunny skies once again.

There’s not a lot blooming in either of our gardens right now but lets see what we can show on this very cold winter’s Bloom Day.

Here’s what’s blooming in Christine’s garden in July 2012

I’m really surprised at how many blooms I was able to find for this Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. Some of my plants seem to think it’s nearly spring and while there are no mass displays of beautiful flowers, it seems at least one of each has decided to excite me with a few blooms to show me whats coming in the next month or two. A single Iris, of all the ones I have planted has a single massive stalk with four stunning blooms! I can’t wait for the rest to wake up and start to flower. And the Tulips (that I vowed not to plant again) are starting to open … and now I’m so glad I planted them again. They really are a joy to behold.

I have been stung by the flower bug this week because I went nursery shopping to bring some colour to my garden for Bloom Day (yes, I have to admit this!) Two Gardens in Winter for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

It is taking a little more effort in June to put together something interesting from our Two Gardens this winter. Even though the foliage and the surrounding trees and shrubs are not looking too shabby, the blooms are timid and don’t seem in the mood to show their faces. We have captured a few hidden gems and hope to impress a few of you this Garden Bloggers Bloom Day!

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in June 2012

I have not spent enough time cultivating blooms to give an impressive show this month, but the few sunny days we have in between the cold Winter showers has kept a few beauties from hiding all together. Because of the way our house is positioned, we have a lot of dew during the winter days and it never really dries out and the air is icy when the sun has set. So when the sun is out there is a short window of warmth that penetrates the garden and the house. Let’s see what we can find …

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in June 2012 …

You have to really look hard for blooms in my garden this winter. Without the Camellias my winter garden would be very drab but it is still a joy to see a hint of spring to come as all the bulbs are emerging and are looking strong and lush. Don’t let the photographs fool you – it might look like I have lots going on, but in reality it is only the camellias you would notice if you popped in for a visit today. All the other blooms are hiding shyly behind them …

It’s almost Winter in Two Gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

Brrr … Winter is officially two weeks away but it’s feeling decidedly cold and ‘wintry’ already. There’s not really much blooming in our gardens right now but a little planning means we have a few pretty blooms so that we can still take part in Garden Bloggers Bloom Day – this being our 15th time!

Thank you for joining us for our late Autumn show of whats flowering in our South African gardens.

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in May 2012 …

I’m not loving Autumn as much as I did last year. I think it may have something to do with some of the plants maturing in my garden and not acting all “fresh and new” as they did last year this time. I’m noticing variegated foliage returning to type (more about that in another post) and just in general I can see some plants need replacing or a severe cutting back (aka a complete makeover). Or perhaps its the change in weather patterns? We seem to be having more rain this year, which is a good thing, but it does change the way some plants behave. But lets see what I have to show …

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in May 2012

The autumn is ending on a cold note, but I still have the feeling that the warm sun is there to bring life to new seedlings. I have a little meadow patch that will delight me next Bloomers Day, so I look forward to sharing that. There are blooms in special corners, so the mass of colour may not be there, but I do delight in the hidden treasures. Here’s a few colourful corners …..

April in two gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

This month we have finally experienced the big cool down, but the hot days still linger on this day, 15 April for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. We have had heavy down pours, then sweltering heat, then the big chill! It is not uncommon to have 4 seasons in one day this time of year, so this can cause havoc in the garden. Let’s see what’s blooming in our gardens……

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in April 2012

The rains came! Whew! Needed that so badly. The air feels cleaner and my mood has lifted. The heat always drains everything out of me with no real motivation to get out there in the garden. So – there are a few new additions and some good ol’ favourites! This is the month to sow my winter vegetables, so my main aim is to get the clean up done and get the seeds in the ground. A few borage, marigold and bulb flowers will find their way in the big planting – so we shall have colour!!

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in April 2012

My poor garden has taken a real beating this time around and with so much to do and clean up, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. If the weather would just clear up long enough to let me get to it all, that would also be nice. Maybe this week. For now, I have only a few things blooming which I’d like to share. I’m happy to have lots of roses blooming, the Camellias are starting to flower quite profusely now and the little Bush Violets are covering the Azalea bed with their charming little blooms.  The Mexican Petunia astounds me – I’ve successfully propagated it and now have four new plants. The original is taller than I am now and continues to flower and looks beautiful – look at the size of the leaves – I love it!

March in two gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

The simmering heat of Summer should be behind us on this our 13th combined post for March’s Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. Instead we are battling temperatures in the high 30’s this week – 39° today again and not even a hint of a breeze! We are both looking for that zing again that has us babbling on about our gardens. The heat has taken its toll, but with the resilience we have seen, it is all about lessons learnt and knowledge gained.

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in March 2012

Its supposed to be Autumn in Cape Town … but today was another of those days that was so hot it was impossible to do much other than wish for cooler weather! I worry about some of the plants when it gets this hot. Some absolutely love the heat (the thatching reed seems to grow inches every day) whilst others hang their pretty heads from heat exhaustion. I’m itching to get back into the garden so I hope that cooler weather is on its way. Here is what is flowering in my garden right now …

It might not be my best show, but at least there is still a bit of colour. However, the same flowers are on show, so this is my cue to start planning my garden and be a bit more adventurous with creepers and ground covers and salvias and flowering herbs and fruit trees with beautiful blossoms. Most of my herbs are going to flower so….A fresh new face is needed!!

February in two gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

It’s the height of Summer here in the Western Cape as we do our twelfth combined post for February’s Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. Time flies when you are gardening….. Summer has whipped up a few eye-openers when the hazy heat hit us all badly and a few plants struggled to cope. But overall most of the garden showed great resilience and with lots of blooms to share this Bloom Day.

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in February 2012

As Summer seems to be winding down and we approach Autumn, I look forward to seeing my Autumn bloomers spring to life, but for now I am enjoying the last of the summer blooms. The Mexican Petunia has been my star performer and two new acquisitions are the Coreopsis verticillata “Moonbeam” and Sutera “Bermuda Sky”, both of which want Full Sun so it will be quite challenging to place them in my garden. A Valentines Day purchase was the rose labelled simply “Patio Rose” which was so pretty that I bought it anyway. Its a miniature rose of the prettiest pink, I couldn’t resist. Thanks for joining me in my Summer Garden.

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in January 2012

Well, 2011 has been such an active year for me in the garden and I can boast a bit now with all the blooms this summer. The heat is setting in, so I am looking at doing less of the hard work and more of the lazy work, like watering the garden! I am thrilled with my first time ever sunflowers. They really bring the sun!! But my garden may not be as colourful as Christines’. Relax with me and sit back and I hope you will enjoy what’s blooming in my garden…
