Summer at last in the Two Gardens for December Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

Yay! Summer, and our tenth combined post for the monthly Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day for December 2011. All the planting and gardening of the past ten months has resulted in a splendid array of summer flowers in both gardens and we are thrilled with the results of our efforts. Not as pretty as spring but certainly bright and beautiful, our gardens are bringing us so much joy. We hope you enjoy our blooms!

Thank you for joining us for our December “Summer Stunners” …

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in December 2011 …

I’m loving Summer! The beds have filled out beautifully and everywhere I look there are beautiful combinations of foliage or flowers. I’m especially delighted about shrubs and plants that are flowering for the first time or flowering again after no-showing in years gone by. Such are the joys in my “little gardening world”; A Gardenia comes back to life, a Hydrangea recovers to surprise me with a beautiful display, Weigelias are looking great and everywhere I turn I enjoy the sweet smell of summer (and gardening success). Thank you for joining me in my Summer garden.

Late-spring in Two Gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day in November

The spring has brought with it a variety of colour and shapes and sizes! Our two gardens have exploded with new energy and with the weather still bringing us rain, we can enjoy the shades of green with splashes of colour!

Thank you for joining us for our November “Spring energy” …

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in November 2011

Now that my garden is in full production mode, there seems to be this energy in the air! The speed of growth in my garden is noticeable from one day to the next. I can see by the last GBBD post and it gives me great hope of new things to come. We are already enjoying a harvest of new potatoes and assorted lettuce leaves for salads. And my roses are in full bloom. Wow! I am loving my garden at the moment …

I’m actually a little dissapointed with my garden at the moment. The wonderful displays of early spring are long gone and there is no big “Wow Moment” in the garden right now. Lots is flowering but the blooms are either just starting their summer display or are fading away. So I am sorry that I don’t have anything awesome to show this month, but here are a few of my November Blooms.

Mid-spring in one garden for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day October

Springtime brings with it hope and big dreams and promises – with the garden full of colour and each plant growing 3cm each night while I am asleep, I have great plans of picking bunches of flowers for the home and gathering fabulous salad greens and baby potatoes from my veggie patch for summer lunches. I am missing my best friend and blogger buddy, Christine, this Blogger Bloom Day, but I hope to make her proud with all I have to show this GBBD post! There are so many plants and bulbs and flowers that she has given me that she is also part of this post. Hurry home…..

Thank you for joining us for our October “Spring colour” …

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in October 2011

I have seen the transformation of my garden and the love that both Christine and I have put into it – yes, I have a number of plants and Irises that come from Christine – so I can quite happily say that here is what is growing in my garden with Christine’s help this Garden Bloggers Bloom Day!! I’m loving Spring, every minute of it! I’ve always enjoyed Spring, but this year is extra special as it is the first spring I get to enjoy all the work I’ve put into my garden over the last six months. From an overgrown jungle to a garden full of lovliness, everything feels fresh and new. I’m most especially proud of my Irises (which I was told I would never be able to grow) and of my indigenous South Africa blooms (please click to enlarge the Babiana – you need to see the enlargement to appreciate how gorgeous this little native is). Pre-Spring in two Gardens for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day in August

Winter is coming to an end (Yipee!), the birds are chirping, the plants are waking up from their rest period and we have buds and flowers galore! It’s been a very mild winter here in the Cape and we expect it still to rain during August and September (we are hoping) and winter is by no means completely over, but we can smell and feel spring in the air which gives us reason to celebrate!

Thank you for joining us for our August “Bloom Parade” …

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in August 2011

Just like Christine, I am so looking forward to spring. I have recreated my garden these past winter months and with more things to plant and lots of seeds to sow, I will have a thriving garden bursting with new blooms and birds. Most of my flowers are still buds but I do know that they also can’t wait for spring!! Enjoy your Bloom Day xxx

Here’s what’s blooming in Christine’s garden in August 2011

I’m excited about the arrival of Spring and the promise of a garden filled with lovely plants and flowers. My favourite pre-spring discovery this week was the first blooms on the Hymenosporum flavum (Australian frangipani). This is a very tall tree in my front garden that is usually covered in yellow frangipani-like blossoms throughout spring which the birds love. I realised there were blooms at the very top of the tree when I heard the birds jumping around in it and took out my zoom lens to see them – and there at the very top of the tree were the first blooms and my first sunbird of the season! (see my last photo). I’ll get better photos of the birds and the blooms when the tree gets covered all over in its delightfully fragrant blossoms in the next few weeks.

Here is my pre-Spring bloom day show in anticipation of things to come.

Mid-winter in the Two Gardens for July Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

It’s really fun to think about this – Right now, around the world, there are about two hundred gardeners busy posting photographs of the flowers in their gardens to share with others for the monthly Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day – the “online gardening event of the month”, the day to show off what you have blooming in your garden!

So its mid winter here in Sunny South Africa and in the two gardens, and what do we have to show? Regrettably not a lot – certainly not as much as Diana of Elephant’s Eye who’s lovely garden in Porterville is a profusion of colour right now. Interesting how the different areas and gardening styles all in relatively close proximity differ so greatly. Without further ado, here are our mid-winter offerings.

Here’s what’s blooming in Christine’s garden in July 2011

There are hundreds of Camellias and Azaleas blooming in my winter garden and it’s full of pinks in various shades, from bright to pale and everything in between. After a month of rain (in June) and the lovely sunny days we’ve had for the last two weeks there is plenty of growth and everything is turning lush and green. Bulbs are popping up all over and I am excited about Spring … not that long to go now.

That’s it from Claremont in Cape Town, lets see whats happening in Barbie’s garden in Philly …

Here’s what’s blooming in Barbie’s garden in July 2011

This is a green month in my area! The farm fields that surround the village are lush and the labours of the local farmers are producing ankle-high shoots! Soon, this will be covered in yellow canola! I love the country!! My front garden is also lush and green and the thirsty ground is enjoying the rains and warm sunny days. I have little in the way of blooms, but I did see some interesting new-comers! The Bulbinella, given to me in an old pot, was transplanted and is now showing signs of life. My month by month reliables – lavender and violas – are always a pleasure. The Nasturtiums have taken over the empty veggie patch, but this is expected and actually I enjoy them. The Fuschias are so pretty now and love the space given to them that the roses usually take over. They always remind me of candy drops. The Blueberry bush is coming to life – it is so neglected in the corner – I really need to give it more love. Christine, my bulbs are growing. I put them in the empty raised bed you gave me so this will be a beautiful show come spring. I have a strange looking onion that is going to flower – I have never seen this so I am curious as to what it is!

Like you, I can’t wait for spring – my favourite time of year! But I do love the lushness of July here in the country!

Happy Blooming Day to all! xxx

Winter in Two Gardens for June Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

Our fourth combined post for the monthly Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day, here’s whats happening in our Gardens in June 2011. With Winter cooling the earth and sending many of our plants into hibernation, there are no mass displays of beautiful blooms, but we do have a few lovelies to show off this month. We hope you enjoy our “June blooms”.

Here’s whats blooming in Christine’s Garden in June 2011

A week ago I was complaining that there would be no blooms to show this month for Garden Bloggers Bloom Day. Then, a fair amount of rain mixed with warm sunny days in between and what a surprise when I went to look for blooms to show. Lots of Camellias (pinks and reds), pink and maroon Azaleas, the first Narcissus bulbs are just opening their pretty faces (Yay!), my very first “grown from seed” Nasturtiums are blooming … all in all not a bad display for a winter garden. Condsidering that June has been a month of planning and some major changes have taken place in my garden including a drastic cutting back of overgrown trees, has sadly left my garden looking quite bleak. But when you get down to it there is lots of pretty in my garden – that is, if you look past the bare branches and sawn off tree tops, there are enough blooms to make me smile…

Here’s whats blooming in Barbie’s Garden in June 2011

Chris, I had no doubt that you would have a beautiful show of winter flowers – your garden is alive with new shoots and anticipated bulbs and I love my visits and the “show-and-tell” as we wander around. They are just lovely! Thank you! My garden tends to hide the small blooms and my usual favourites never disappoint! I did find something blooming, even though I had to go on my hands and knees alot! In between my veggies and herbs were the flowers of these plants. This brought a whole new perspective and the close ups allow me to really see how perfect each flower in my garden can be! And talking about bees…… I caught a happy workers in the act!

Oh yes – I also have my first Nasturtiums from seed!!

Happy gardening to all our friends! xxx

What’s Blooming in Barbie’s Garden in May 2011

With the weather changing and the days bringing unusually warm temperatures and then turing icy cold the next, brings the most interesting flowers. I had little hope of anything exciting. With a busy work schedule, I had little time in the garden this past week so when I stepped out with my camera I found flowers in the smallest of places. Hidden in the tomato patch and high up in the protea bush… enjoy my garden selection!

What’s Blooming in Christine’s Garden in May 2011

With cooler temperatures and a fair amount of rain, growth in my garden has been great resulting in lots of lush green growth, but very few “spectacular” type blooms. The Camellias are flowering, some Azaleas are putting on an early show and the Murraya Exotica (Orange Jasmine) are blooming. Looking around for blooms to give you a good show, here is what’s blooming in my garden in May; lots of pink and white, but the overwhelming theme in my “May Garden” is Green!

Come on SA Gardeners, there are so few South African Gardens on display at Garden Bloggers Bloom Day and we want to see more! (If you want see another beautiful South African Autumn Garden, visit Diana’s garden at Elephant’s Eye. Its looking spectacular in Porterville).

What’s Blooming in Christine’s Garden in April, 2011

Well and truly into Autumn, there is little to show you that you haven’t already seen. Camellias are in full bloom and looking quite lovely and the Mona Lavender are still providing plenty of interest with their understated little purple flowers. Autumn it may be but my garden is all pink, white and violet … very pretty, and I’m working hard at preparing my Spring Garden, deciding when and where to plant which bulbs, getting everything ready and prepared, its lots of fun! For today, here are my most show-worthy Blooms (Tibouchina is my favourite flower right now. Does anyone else have one of these?)

What’s Blooming in Barbie’s Garden in April, 2011

I am quite amazed at all the beautiful blooms in Christine’s Garden. I have to say that my display is not so bold and colourful. Subdued and tame, my garden is starting to see the effects of autumn. The only real new flowers that are blooming are my indiginous proteas. But my never-failing lavender and my sweet-smetting roses are always ensuring that my vases in the home stay full :-)! The Lemon Verbena has the most delicate blooms and I had to add this small bush because she is trying so very hard. I have a few new-comers that seem to have stayed – the small violas. I do hope you enjoy what I can offer and I am looking forward to seeing all the spring gardens up there in the Northern Hemisphere! Happy Blooming Friday!!

For Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day – a combined show in March

Our very first combined post, today we celebrate “Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day” with all our new gardening friends from around the world by showing what is flowering in our gardens on the 15th. We hope you enjoy our “blooms” (or as we say here in South Africa, “blommetjies”), and then join Carol at May Dreams Gardens to see what she and other gardeners around the world have blooming today – why not join in by showing the blooms from your garden!

What’s Blooming in Christine’s Garden, (Claremont, Cape Town)

There’s not much happening in my garden as we are now heading into Autumn. As I took a walk around I was surprised to find any “photo-worthy” blooms. In fact, I’m overcome with the need to clean and tidy. Everything looks messy and in need of attention – not the pretty picture of just three short weeks ago. As this is a combined post, I will limit myself to showing just 6 blooms today. A lot of these I’ve already shown over the last few weeks and we are seeing the last of these before the Camellias wake up to delight us through the colder months.

That’s all from me folks, lets head over to Barbie’s garden to see whats flowering on the Cape West Coast …

What’s Blooming in Barbie’s Garden (Philadelphia, Cape)

Well – I don’t have many blossoms in my garden, seeing it is a functional and edible garden, but I do have my roses and lavender that never fail. I just bought a carnation, so this is exciting to see bloom. I also have a new comfrey plant with the most delicate flowers. To my surprise, my Protea is budding! This is something we all don’t see enough of! Hope you enjoy my variety of blommies!
