Not mad about these mushrooms

We have had a spell of warm weather followed by wet weather. Perfect conditions for mushroom growing! Well – I have had a few of them growing on my grass patch! I am not sure if these are edible, but no matter if they are or not, I’m NOT going to eat them!

Can anybody help me with this species of mushroom?

I also found this horrible looking growth in my raised beds! Oh dear! I hope this is not poisonous! I immediately Googled fungus, mushrooms, poisonous fungus……. every possible combination. I finally came to the exact photo of what I have in my garden and I was relieved to find it is NOT poisonous. It is known as the Domicile Cup Fungus.

An unusual cup fungus called “dung cup” (Peziza vesiculosa). This species commonly grows on dung, manure and rotting straw in corrals, stables, gardens and other fertilized areas. Well, at least I know that my soil is rich in nutrients 🙂

Good, bad or just ugly?

I got a bit of a fright today when I was weeding in my back garden. In the very shaded area which I would classify as “deep shade” there stand a few trees. I’d recently had some branches pruned off them as well as had foliage cut back from trees that were threatening to break through our bedroom windows and had never examined the trees in any real detail before. They were just there. Until today when I was removing weeds in this area and suddenly found myself staring at this …

Good, bad or ugly?

To be totally honest, I think its sort of beautiful. Interesting, different and alive. And I stood staring at it in awe for a while, took the photos and only after downloading them to my computer and really examining it in detail did it occur to me that this may not be interesting or beautiful at all, and that I might need to do something about it.

Is there something wrong with the tree? I’d really appreciate advice and opinions on this. Do I leave it and enjoy it or is it some horrible I have to deal with?

Yikes! Mushrooms! what to do?

Oh my, its certainly never dull in the garden is it? Just when I think I’m winning, something new pops up out of nowhere and I have a new issue to deal with. And novice-newbie gardener that I am, I really don’t know what to do with this new thing happening in one of the beds nor what is causing it. A full on growth of uninvited mushrooms – and there’s nothing magic about them! How did they get here? How can I prevent these or is it a good thing?

So here are the photographs of my “mushroom forest”. They are confined to this bed which is small and has growing in it Sacred Bamboo (Nandina Domestica), Dwarf Sacred Bamboo (Nandina Pygmaea) and Murraya Exotica. The area is shaded but gets light. The plants are all doing well in this bed, very well in fact. Lots of new healthy growth. No pests visible. So is this mushroom something to worry about and what should I do with it?
