A New Rose

What would you say about a rose that is always in bloom, always the perfect colour red, is never plagued by bugs or beetles and needs zero water? If that sounds good, how about it has no thorns, needs no fertiliser, thrives in full sun or full shade and will never die? It doesn’t get black spot – or any other spot for that matter and it is immune to all diseases.

Need a spot of colour in a drab area? Simple, just move the rose for instant colour. Want the blooms in a bunch or spread out? Rosa hybrid “Beaded” will happily oblige! You could even bring it indoors and place it in the vase and return it to the garden when you please.

But if that all sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is …

New rosa hybrid

These cute hand-beaded roses were loving created by rural women with no other form of income. Add a charming salesman and the fact that I’m a sucker for helping people, so it is that I introduced this new rose to my garden in a bed where we wait for plants to fill in.

New roses

They are pretty, I think. Hand beaded with care, I liked the roses the most. Other “flowers” on offer were Arum Lilies, Agapanthus, Strelizias, Sun flowers … most of which were too gaudy for my taste.

And as is typical of road-side sellers I was offered the tortoise at a “very special price” if I bought all the roses. *Sigh*, I am a salesman’s dream 🙂

Non-plant garden things and some non-garden plant things

Hi Barbie – your post about Non-plant Garden Things you did last week motivated me look around the garden and see what photo-worthy “Non-Plant garden things” I have. I have a few but I don’t have as many as I would really like. Right now I’m dreaming of a statue for my deep-shade garden, maybe a fair maiden carrying a water jug, surrounded by some lovely ferns and moss, a few lillies at her feet, you get the picture? But when I mention that idea here at home I get raised eyebrows and weird sidelong glances, so I haven’t pursued it any further. But I’m sure my gardening companions would welcome it – for Hercules it would be another spot to watch for possible bird landings and as for Dexter … well, he’s been to known to cock a leg at strange objects and another would suit him just fine I’m sure.

But besides imaginary garden statues, what do I actually have? Here are a few favourites …

Posting these few favourite items that live in my garden but are non-plant related made me think a bit about the things that are not in the garden but are plant related. Are those classified as “Non-Garden Plant Things”? Like all the gardening books I’ve managed to collect in the last few months, the  now well-thumbed sample “Gardening Journal” I use daily and my watering can? What about my lovely chest that holds all my gardening paraphenalia and the iPad Apps for gardeners? Can I post those too? heck, you know what … this is my blog and I can post what I want to – so here we go …
