What’s this?

Whats this 03

While I’ve been cleaning up my garden and planting seedlings, I have been watching these two strange “weed” bushes developing in the corner where the old conifer tree was. I wanted to see what they would eventually become, but I am now curious to know what the dickens these are! The first bush has a very familiar looking flower – similar to a tomato and the actual potato plant! Any clue?? Then, [...]

A wet winter garden

Wet Garden 12a

The weather man has predicted rain and more rain and cold temperatures, so for this weekend we made soup and collected firewood for the  fireplace and the only thing missing is a good book. I did take some time during the week to take note of the chores still needing my attention. The chicken run needs a landscape artist – sigh! …. and the next lot of seedlings need sowing – ok! [...]

What a Hen House?

Hen House 01a

We thought we did our “girls” a favour this weekend by buying them a brand new Hen House – well, it’s a dog house but we won’t tell them. It was not expensive and George, who builds these great pet houses, uses old pellets to build then, so they are made from 100% recycled material! George makes a living buy building these and he does a really fine job. He is a [...]

Meadow in May

Meadow in May 04

I am so excited to see the carpet of Meadow green is now flowering – that is so quick! It seems like yesterday when I scattered a bunch of Winter Mix meadow seeds onto my bleak back garden patch. There are so many different varieties of plants that I will only know what is what when they start blooming. I am not worried about the weeds because Mother Nature doesn’t either. I [...]

Leopard Tree in May

Lepoard Tree in May 07

I have to highlight this special tree – my Leopard Tree (caesalpinnea ferrea). I have to stand in awe sometimes when I walk out on my front deck and see the Leopard Tree going through it’s next seasonal change. (previous post on the leaves here) It literally changes from week to week. The bark is now maturing and the beautiful colours are coming through. This is the reason it is called a [...]

Seed collection development

Seeds 01

The plan for this month of May is to get all my seeds planted for the winter garden. I have an array of seeds that I have collected, swopped, and bought. Slowly I will be only sowing my very own seeds, but for now I am still researching and experimenting with various supplies. I started off with store bough commercial seeds from a well-known supplier. The only problem I have is that [...]

Garden friends spotted in my garden

Garden Friends 011

I love walking through my garden, but when I stop and bend down, I see so much more! I have so many active friends that work and play in my garden. Let me introduce some of them to you. My sunbirds are back and enjoying the Pineapple Sage bush – they frequent this bush, so my next photograph shoot will hopefully catch the splendid male. Lots of Praying Mantis, I am happy [...]

Miscanthus probe

Miscanthus 04

Well, Alan – this post has finally been uploaded. You have been patiently asking me to get a closer view of this big question mark – my bold grass and centre piece of my grass feature. I have done a close up inspection of my Miscanthus Sinensis Gracillimus (it was labelled and sold to me as this!). I know that the last post I did of my Grass Feature update you did [...]

Fig Tree damage

Fig Tree Borer 03

I received a comment on an old post from Charmain from Arborviews on the 19th of April, about the bug on the Fig Tree. She identifies it as a Phryneta Spinator – Stem Borer Beetle from South Africa. A real pest!! The larva bore into the fig tree and can actually kill it!! It was uncanny, because that very same day, I was taking photos of my “meadow” for my update and [...]

Grasses highlighted – 1st anniversary

Panicum Virgatum

I have been asked a few times by many to put together a more detailed post on the Grass Feature in my front garden. It is one of my very special places in my garden and takes pride of place (ok – the veggie patch is still the number one!) This is the month of its 1st Anniversary, so we can really go back and see how it looked 1 year ago. [...]
