Apple Espalier

september 87

My next project is to learn how to do an Espalier Tree. I bought 2 apple trees last week and I have an ugly vibracrete wall I want to hide, and this will be perfect!! The term espalier refers to the way fruit trees are trained to grow against a wall. It makes the tree easier to prune and the fruit easier to pick. This decorative method was often used traditional walled [...]

I Won, I Won (Actually, the Lily is the Winner)

The winning photograph

Can you believe it, I actually won a competition. Not only that, I won it for a photograph of one of my flowers (doing the happy dance here). I bought all my bulbs from Hadeco, South Africa’s prime bulb producer. Then I found out that they have a weekly photo competition they run on their Facebook page and a few weeks ago, when my bulbs started flowering I started entering, and have [...]

Not mad about these mushrooms

september 102

We have had a spell of warm weather followed by wet weather. Perfect conditions for mushroom growing! Well – I have had a few of them growing on my grass patch! I am not sure if these are edible, but no matter if they are or not, I’m NOT going to eat them! Can anybody help me with this species of mushroom? I also found this horrible looking growth in my raised [...]

Sowing the seeds of love

Seed sowing 03

As you know, I am growing a full vegetable garden this season. I have my 3 huge raised beds to fill and the large veggie patch area I have on the side of my house. I prefer to cultivate my veggies by sowing seeds and through experience, I tend to have a heavy hand when it comes to sowing seeds. I over-sow and end up with a cramped environment where the plants [...]

Bugs eye view

WILD FLOWER 01

It is amazing what we see through our eyes. But what if we could see through the eyes of a bug? It is of course impossible for humans to percieve what an insect sees, but we think that a compound eye, consisting of 2 to 20 000 lenses will project a sort of mosaic image. So our eyes are very sophisticated to see near and far, like we do. What an amazing [...]

Sowing the seeds of love

1 Garden august12

Hi Chris, I am busy sowing my spring vegetable seeds using the great ideas from our blogger friends. I have my magic seeder and recycling all the toilet roll inners to use as planters. I’ve been collecting for ages, as you can see! I’m busy planting lettuce, tomato, beet root, cucumber, sweet basil, cabbage, spinach, swiss chard, carrots, squashes, onions, broccolli, and the new potatoes still to come. I can’t wait to see these [...]

Happy Birthday

1 Happy Birthday 2

Happy Birthday my dear friend! I wish you a wonderful day today and may all your wishes come true. I am so fortunate to have you in my life and a best friend is a gift that knows no other. We may take different paths in life, but no matter where we go, we take a little of each other everywhere! Many people will walk in and out of our lives, but a [...]

Sunbird in my garden

1 SUGARBIRDS 18

I finally had the opportunity to get photos of my local sunbird. The couple come back every year and nest in the same tree. He is a malachite green – it also looks blue sometimes in the light! He is a noisy bird and fights off all possible intruders – the local yellow weaver and the fiskal shrike (butcher bird). He chases them all around the garden, so I am assuming that there are [...]

Indigenous Roadside Flora

Roadside blommies 11

We took photos on the way back from Harry Goemans Garden Centre of the beautiful flora along the roadside. The drive is a very picturesque stretch that takes us over the Ou Kaapse weg (The Old Cape Road) over the Steenberg Mountain Plateau where the Silvermine Nature Reserve is situated. Harry Goemans Garden Centre is situated in the Noordhoek Valley near Fishoek – so this was a special outing for the two of us! [...]

The Mighty Mugwood Tree

1 Mugwood Tree Planting38

Well, the tree finally found itself into our front garden – the Mighty Mugwood tree. This work of art was the idea of my husband when he brought home two crates of metal mugs. He came up with the idea of a big tree. I was so enthusiastic with my hubby’s interest in the garden that I was immediately supportive and said the big old lavender can now move. Well, the rest [...]
