Bye-bye Buffy

04 BUFFY 04

A sad day indeed. My favourite pet – Buffy passed away this weekend -Friday 8 February 2013. She had been bravely coping with Bumblefoot and the traumatic operation on both feet in December. It took its toll on her and she developed breathing problems and finally stopped eating. Her life with us was a full 6 years and she was the Queen of the Roost! She always made sure she had the [...]

Garden Colour

03 Garden colour 08

I have been in a gloomy mood of late, with my favourite chicken not doing well. Buffy has been suffering from Bumblefoot and had a major operation in December on both her feet. But alas, it is back – regardless of all the medication and the scrupulous cleaning of her feet and her New Hen House and the daily wrapping of her feet. The Vet warned of this and that it could [...]

Ramblers and vines

01 Vines 02

I have been watching my garden daily and to my wonder, there are so many vines and climbers and rambling plants that I have in my vegetable selection, I will have a bountiful harvest of squashes and cucumbers this winter. I have tried to grow cucumbers before with no success, so this one I am following like a hawk. The Butternut Squashes were successful last season, but I had so many of [...]

The Great Hen House Build

Hen House Build Fence 29

The much anticipated and prepared for Hen House and Chicken Run happened this holiday!! I so wanted to make a real Hen House for “the girls” because the reclaimed area has left them with no real home of their own – just a makeshift place that was only meant to be temporary. I was lucky to have the help of my many-talented hubby – the one with the real skill – and [...]

A Summer Harvest

Another look at the gorgeous Brinjal

My limited edible gardening produces just enough to keep me interested. I like to try new things to see how they grow here and this month I’m having great fun with the Brinjal “Black Beauty” I planted recently. It’s obviously in an ideal spot because it produced flowers almost immediately and the first Brinjal is almost ready for picking. I think I could pick it now but I’d like it to get [...]

Seasonal Celebration

03 Celebration 03

Seasonal Celebrations are the joys that continually bring a smile to your face. If I had to choose one area in my garden that has always given me the greatest pleasure – I have to say that it is my Grass Feature. From the designing of it to the shopping expedition that Christine and I made to the Elgin area in the Cape to find the best grasses. Then the layout and [...]
